Life and Times: Growing up on the East Side of Detroit

Just wanted to share some news with you about my dad, Rodney Bork. His book, "Life and Time: Growing up on the East Side of Detroit," has been selling quite well – with thanks to you for helping him get started.

 

We finally got the book on Amazon – as well as his Music Makers CD (should be on Amazon in a week or so). He had to order a third printing of 1,000 books (by Amazon – they do a fantastic job) for personal signings.

 

I can’t tell you how grateful I am to you for encouraging and helping my dad, as well as offering me much needed advice. The book was never intended to be more than something for family and friends. We ended up having to take it to the next level (the paperback version) due to requests for it. Somehow a professional writer got the book and wrote a review. Dad’s even gotten requests for his book from Warsaw Poland and Alaska, of all places.

 

My dad had a hip replacement early in the year which resulted in some complications and a prolonged healing process. He gets tired easily now, but has been invited to do a book signing at an event in Hamtramck in a couple weeks. They're expecting around 400 people to attend. I think it helps him feel alive and connected. 

 

We had an 80^th birthday party for them in August and enjoyed the company of close to 100 family & friends. 

 

Anyway, just when you may have thought you may have been forgotten, your kindness to my dad has not been. He even plugged your website in one of his articles a year ago

NFL great Alex Karras dies at 77

A LIFE REMEMBERED

July 15, 1935 - October 10, 2012

Alexander George "Alex" Karras, nicknamed "The Mad Duck," was an American football player, professional wrestler, and actor. He played football with the Detroit Lions in the National Football League from 1958–1962 and 1964–1970. As an actor, Karras is noted for his role as Mongo in the 1974 comedy film Blazing Saddles, and for starring in the ABC sitcom Webster (1983–89) alongside his wife Susan Clark, as the title character's adoptive father.

Red Wings announcer Budd Lynch dies

A LIFE REMEMBERED

Aug. 7, 1917 - Oct 9, 2012

Longtime Detroit Red Wings public address announcer Budd Lynch has died.

Officials with the team confirmed Tuesday the Hockey Hall of Fame announcer died earlier in the day. He was 95.

He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and received the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting issued by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.

Motown’s Marvelettes Nominees for 2013 R&R Hall of Fame Induction

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced that Motown’s girl group The Marvelettes have been nominated for induction in 2013. The group scored Motown’s fist number one Pop hit with “Please Mr. Postman” in 1961.

They had a stream of other hits during the ‘60’s including “Playboy,” “Beechwood 45789,” “Too Many Fish In The Sea.” “Don’t Mess With Bill,” and “The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game.”


For the first time in its history, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will offer fans the opportunity to officially participate in the induction selection process. 

Beginning on Thursday, October 4 and continuing through December 5, the public can cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2013 inductees.

Motown Legend Frank Wilson Dies

A LIFE REMEMBERED

                      December 5, 1940 – September 27, 2012

 

Motown producer and singer Frank Wilson has died at the age of 71.

Wilson passed away on Thursday, September 27th following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.

Starting his career in the new Motown office in Los Angeles in 1965, Wilson moved to the label's spiritual home in Detroit, Michigan and began writing and producing tracks for artists including Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye, and The Supremes.

Some of the biggest songs he helped write include The Supremes' Love Child, All I Need by The Temptations and Chained by Gaye.

He also enjoyed a brief time in the spotlight as a vocalist following the release of his only single Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), which went on to become a huge hit on Britain's Northern Soul scene and is now the world's most expensive disc due to its rarity - with one copy selling in 2009 for $40,000 (£25,000).

Wilson left Motown in 1976 and was ordained as a Christian minister.

Filmmaker Tony D'Annunzio is a successful sound producer turned documentary filmmaker. His very first film, Louder Than Love, won at the Las Vegas Film Festival for Best Documentary Michael Moore picked it for the Traverse City Film Festival and has been championing it on public radio and in interviews. After four years of working on the film whenever he could spare a few moments, getting help and getting people excited about the project, he's got a really solid film on his hands.

A LIFE REMEMBERED

At Motown Records in the late ’60s, Babbitt’s thick, fluid bass lines drove the groove on songs by the Temptations (“Ball of Confusion”), Stevie Wonder (“Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours),” Rare Earth (“Losing You”), Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (“The Tears of a Clown”) and many others.

Happy 99th Birthday, Harry Jarkey!

Harry Jarkey, a Detroit TV personality and nightclub entertainer
in the late '50s and '60s, was best known for a morning variety program
called Our Friend Harry, which ran from 1957-59, as well as The Fun House ,
a children's show with Ricky the Clown. He continued his career at places like
The Roostertail and Bay City's Wenona Beach Amusement Park's casino,
where he worked for 30 years, until his retirement at age 75.
He moved to southern California in the '70s to live near another
former Detroiter and friend, Danny Thomas.
